Arrival to our chosen property- Can you see the Lizards? and the size of the ants is so much bigger here!!
These bees are so gentle and cooperative, they literally invite you to come and engage with them in total vulnerability. One feels it to be absolutely meaningless to wear any protection. So much awe and respect for their intelligence and understanding. A true divine marvel of a single heart composed of a thousand unique individuals; beating to the same heart beat, yet each one authentically to their own inner tune.
Having had one month to pack all our belongings and go find a new home, we decided to settle into a place that would be the seed of building a bee sanctuary.
We are an artistic couple who kept bees in our former place of residence in Luxembourg, but our circumstances had changed from one day to another, where we were forced to leave with our 2 ball pythons > a 15 year old Labrador companions and a couple of vegetable seedlings with barely any finances to realistically help us start from scratch. .
We have cared for 2 bee colonies in the past two years. The place where we were staying provided us with a small part of the garden in which we were able to install our hives, during which we have learnt a lot and made very exciting discoveries.
Together we make art, music, goldsmithing, leatherwork, needlework and natural fragrances, while finding joy in exploring and discovering different forms of craftsmanship and autonomy.
We've explored over the past few years how to grow our own food sustainably and organically, and researched solutions to help bees solve all the problems they face. We would very much like to continue in this direction.
Our intentions from the beginning of this adventure were not at all to produce honey or other by-products, but simply to offer them a place to be themselves and live a real bee life; free and independent. We understood that bees are commonly exploited in a way that rarely favors the consideration of their own needs and resources, and their own vital support (honey, pollen and propolis) over-exploited by the common ways and procedures in modern beekeeping. For us, it was extremely important to respect their autonomy and to witness the magic of their being; our two hives have survived this winter without any interference from us, they have managed everything on their own and to be able to witness it as a human is a deep inspiration. This being proof that they have the innate intelligence and ingenuity to not only stay healthy, but even have the resilience to survive an entire winter on their own without crutches. It inspired us to want to give this chance and possibility to bees as a species, and frankly, it's something we would wish for every living thing on earth. Obviously, if we could provide a place of peace and plenty for any animal in our sanctuary in the future, we wouldn't hesitate.
The bee sanctuary we want to create is supposed to be exactly that, a real sanctuary, without any commercial exploitation of the bee.
We are experimenting with creating the environment necessary for the bee to thrive, offering a healthy and prosperous environment to provide them with the needs that are fundamentally lacking and ignored in the current beekeeping practices today. Paul Stamets' studies were hugely inspiring, he discovered that one particular reason the bee is in such trouble is the unnoticed symbiosis that bees share with fungi. We harvested no honey from our bees allowing them to keep their whole stock for the winter, and we also fed them natural immune-boosting Reishi mushroom extract inspired by Stamets' work and made our best to encourage the growth of fungi in our garden so that they have access to it of their own free will.
We would like to continue to work with the new knowledge gained from his research and use all new data to help restore a flourishing environment in which the bee cannot just survive, but truly thrive.
For those interested, I would highly recommend checking out the work of Paul Stamets, as there are very few people who actually implement his findings into their practice. Here is a video of his research.
For those who would like to support us by purchasing one of our works, you can see our artistic creations here.
Finally, we leave you some photos of the hives that we had at the location that we have left behind.

In the name of the Bee People,
THANK YOU!!
